Public Strike in India is a normal phenomenon and whole year affair. Public protests mean strong disagreements with or opposition to certain decisions taken by the government. Nowadays, public protests are staged in every nook and corner of the country for different purposes and they have sometimes become a nuisance.
Union workers enjoy undeniable advantages, ranging from the tangible benefit of higher wages to the personal satisfaction of knowing their voices are recognized in the workplace. However, leveling the dynamics of the complicated employer-employee relationship also comes at a cost to both sides.
Public protests take diverse forms. Very often protesters carry posters and march along busy roads blocking transport. As a result, law-abiding citizens cannot reach their work places and children find it difficult to attend school. What is more, protesters clash with the Police and we often see mini battles on public roads.
Strikes first became important during the industrial revolution, when mass labour became important in factories and mines. In most countries, they were quickly made illegal, as factory owners had far more political power than workers
It is true that people have a fundamental right to protest against injustice. Instead of solving their problems, the government uses water cannons to disperse unruly crowds. This has become a daily routine and ordinary law-abiding citizens are wondering whether we are heading for anarchy.
Public protests also discourage foreign investors. When they realize that the economy is sluggish, they would take the next plane to return home. Protesters should realize this fact.
1. Employees on strike are guaranteed union advocacy in the workplace. The union, not the employer, has the power to determine disciplinary actions, including termination, which generally equates to greater job security.
- A strike gives workers power through a collective voice. Employers have no choice but to negotiate with striker unions in order to maintain productivity. The right to strike is the ultimate show of worker galvanization.
1. Union protection makes it difficult for employers to discipline, terminate or even promote employees. Strikes can decide whom they accept into their fold. Therefore, membership in many unions for strikes becomes less about skill and competency and more about networking.
- The necessary tension between employers and employees resulting from strikes is often counterproductive. The combative nature of the relationship promotes workplace hostility rather than workplace cooperation and collaboration.
